El Yellow Slip (certificado MEU1) es el documento de identidad de residencia para ciudadanos UE en Chipre. Es el documento fundamental que abre la puerta a todos los trámites administrativos: inscripción fiscal, apertura de cuenta bancaria, GESY, canje de permiso.
Proceso de obtención
Cita en la oficina de inmigración del distrito. Documentos: pasaporte o DNI UE, contrato de alquiler sellado en Hacienda (5-15 EUR), prueba de actividad (certificado de constitución, contrato laboral o prueba de recursos), 2 fotos. Coste: 20 EUR. Plazo: emisión inmediata o 1-2 semanas.
Después del Yellow Slip
Inscripción fiscal (TIC): En la oficina tributaria. Cuenta bancaria: La mayoría de bancos lo exigen. GESY: Inscripción en el sistema sanitario universal. Canje permiso: Opcional pero recomendado tras 6 meses. Seguridad social: Si empleado o con sociedad.
Cambio de dirección
Si cambia de dirección, informe a la oficina de inmigración. El Yellow Slip sigue siendo válido — solo se actualiza la dirección en el sistema.

Why the Yellow Slip Matters
El Yellow Slip (Certificado de Registro MEU1) es el documento más importante en el proceso de traslado de un ciudadano de la UE a Chipre. Sirve como reconocimiento oficial por la República de Chipre de que ha ejercido su derecho de tratado a residir en el país. Sin él, no puede completar la mayoría de los pasos administrativos críticos que siguen a su llegada.
Bank accounts: Every bank in Cyprus requires the MEU1 as proof of legal residence before opening personal or corporate accounts. Without it, your banking setup is blocked.
Tax registration: The Tax Department requires the MEU1 (or equivalent residence documentation for non-EU citizens) to issue your Tax Identification Code (TIC). Without a TIC, you cannot file tax returns, receive taxable income, or claim Non-Dom benefits.
Social insurance: Registration with the Social Insurance Office requires the MEU1. Without social insurance registration, neither you nor your employer can make contributions — which affects GESY healthcare enrollment and future pension entitlements.
Atención sanitaria GESY: La inscripción en el sistema nacional de salud se activa con el registro en la seguridad social, que requiere el MEU1. Hasta que tenga el Yellow Slip, debe confiar en un seguro médico privado.
Driving licence: Exchanging a foreign driving licence for a Cypriot one requires the MEU1 as proof of residence.
Children's school enrollment: While most international schools accept students without a MEU1, public schools and some administrative aspects of private school enrollment require proof of residence.

Documents in languages other than English or Greek must be accompanied by certified translations. For EU documents, an apostille is generally not required (EU regulation on simplified document circulation), but non-EU documents may need apostille certification. When in doubt, bring the apostilled version — it's better to have unnecessary certification than to be turned away for lacking it.
